What is a UPI QR Code?

A UPI QR code is a scannable barcode that contains payment information encoded using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) protocol. UPI is a real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that enables instant money transfers between bank accounts through mobile phones.

When someone scans a UPI QR code with any UPI-enabled app such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, or any banking app, the payment details are automatically pre-filled. The payer simply confirms the transaction with their UPI PIN to complete the payment instantly.

UPI QR codes encode your Virtual Payment Address (VPA), payee name, and optionally an amount and transaction note into a standard upi:// URI format. This makes them universally compatible with all UPI-supported applications across India.

How to Create a UPI QR Code

  1. Enter your UPI ID (VPA) - This is your Virtual Payment Address, such as yourname@okicici, shop@ybl, or business@paytm. You can find this in your UPI app settings.
  2. Add your payee name - Enter the name of the person or business that will receive the payment. This helps the payer verify they are paying the right recipient.
  3. Set an amount (optional) - If you want to request a specific amount, enter it in the amount field. Leave it blank to let the payer choose how much to send.
  4. Add a note (optional) - Include a transaction note or reference, such as an invoice number or payment description.
  5. Customize and download - Pick a color, adjust error correction if needed, and download your UPI QR code in PNG or SVG format.

Where to Use UPI QR Codes

UPI QR codes have become an integral part of the digital payment ecosystem in India. Here are the most popular use cases:

Shops & Retail Stores

Print and display your UPI QR code at the billing counter. Customers scan and pay directly from their phones, eliminating the need for card machines or cash handling.

Restaurants & Cafes

Place QR codes on table tents, menus, or at the checkout counter. Diners can pay their bills without waiting for card terminals or exact change.

Freelancers & Consultants

Include your UPI QR code on invoices, proposals, or your website. Clients can pay you instantly without needing your bank details.

Donations & Fundraising

Share UPI QR codes on social media, event banners, or charity flyers to accept donations seamlessly from supporters.

Invoices & Bills

Embed UPI QR codes on printed or digital invoices so customers can scan and pay the exact amount with one tap.

Events & Registrations

Use UPI QR codes for event entry fees, workshop registrations, or ticket payments at venues and conferences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about UPI QR codes

UPI QR codes generated here follow the standard UPI deep link format and are compatible with all major UPI-enabled apps, including Google Pay (GPay), PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay, WhatsApp Pay, and banking apps like SBI Pay, iMobile, and more. Any app that supports UPI payments can scan and process these QR codes.

Yes, sharing your UPI ID through a QR code is completely safe. Your UPI ID is a payment address, similar to sharing your bank account number for receiving payments. It can only be used to send money to you, not to withdraw money from your account. No one can debit your account using just your UPI ID. Always remember that you should never share your UPI PIN with anyone.

The standard UPI transaction limit set by NPCI is Rs. 1,00,000 (one lakh) per transaction for most banks. However, some categories have higher limits: UPI payments for capital markets, collections, insurance, and medical services can go up to Rs. 2,00,000 or Rs. 5,00,000. Individual bank limits may vary, so check with your bank for exact limits. The QR code itself has no amount restrictions.

Yes, the amount field is completely optional. If you leave it blank, the QR code will prompt the payer to enter the amount themselves when they scan it. This is ideal for shops, freelancers, or anyone who accepts variable payment amounts. If you specify an amount, the payer's app will pre-fill that amount, though most apps still allow the payer to modify it before confirming.

No, the static UPI QR codes generated here never expire. Once created, they will work indefinitely as long as your UPI ID remains active and linked to your bank account. You can print them, share them digitally, or display them at your place of business without worrying about them becoming invalid. If you change your UPI ID, you will need to generate a new QR code.
